Funding Opportunities for Graduate Students

We offer many opportunities for funding for MA and PhD students who work as graduate or research assistants. These positions provide tuition remission and a competative stipend. These applications are part of our December 1 deadline.

There are also opportunities to supplement student stipends with research funds, paid internships, and awards and fellowships. These are given out at the end of the academic year.

  • The Henry and Jessica Schuck Fellowship supports a fully funded Graduate Assistantship for a student working in support of the Reid Public History Institute. Supported by a generous gift from the Schuck family in recognition of their time at UNLV and deep appreciation for history and the mission of the Reid Institute.

  • Graduate students oversee the operation of this statewide preservation organization, housed in the History Department. This position works with the Board of Directors to organize, promote, and produce activites and research related to Nevada preservation efforts.

  • This GA-ship is a opportunity to engage with the Southwest Oral History Association (SOHA). In this position, public history graduate students serve as administors, publicists, and conference organizers for this diverse association.

  • PCB-AHA is housed in the UNLV Department of History. For over a century, the PCB-AHA has been a home to engaged historians working across the American West. We offer innovative Graduate Assistantship opportunities and connections with the AHA on a variety of fronts. 

  • Funded by a generous endowment from the Nevada Sesquicentennial Foundation, this unique program provides public history students with funded summer stipends to research sophisticated site interpretations for K-12 teachers.

  • The Boyer family has long been one of the most consistent and generous supporters of public history at UNLV. They support history research and engagement as a foundation for quality of life in Southern Nevada. The Boyer Foundation has a special interest in oral history and supports students with stipends for work in this area.

  • This funded award is named in honor of leading scholar of the American West and UNLV faculty member, the late Hal Rothman.

    The award is open for applications in early spring and is given to students who specialize in American history.

  • This award is named for UNLV faculty member and scholar of Indigenous history, WIllard H. Rollings and his beloved wife Barbara Williams. Rollings was central in the building of the Department's graduate program and his legacy are the many scholars he trained.

  • This scholarship is given to undergraduate majors or graduate students who demonstrate financial need.

  • This award from Elli Cooper and LauraLee Ledbetter is offered to students of public history and women's studies.
